NIE Number in Spain

Foreigners with financial, professional or social interests in Spain will need to apply for a NIE (Número de Identificación de Extranjeros) which is a personal and exclusive foreigner identification number.

As many think, buying a property in Spain is not the only reason why you need a NIE number but it is needed for multitude of matters as for example:

  • Setting up a business in Spain
  • Buying a car
  • Apply for a driver´s licence
  • Working as an employee
  • Obtaining a mortgage
  • Applying for a credit card/loan
  • Pay taxes
  • Open a bank account
  • Etc…

If you plan to reside in Spain, the first thing you should do is apply for a NIE number

To obtain a NIE you need to go to a National Police Station with a foreigner´s department. Unfortunately, the process to obtain a NIE is long and sometimes difficult for a foreigner who does not speak Spanish. The form to fill in is in Spanish and it can take from a few days to a few weeks to process. The application process is laborious and many hours of waiting in queues, along with the filling out of complex application forms.

The person must apply for the documents in person. However some National Police Stations allow a representative (giving him a Spanish power-of-attorney) to apply for it if the applicant is not in Spain.

We at MP Accountants Marbella hope that we have been able to clear up any doubts about the NIE Number. As always, we are at your disposal for any matters or requirements you might have.
