Want to start a restaurant / cafe / bar on the Costa del Sol?

In this article we explain the factors to take into account when setting up this type of business, the initial steps and procedures and the best way of accounting.

Before you head to the opening of a restaurant you must evaluate the potential success of the business because according to statistics, the hospitality business do not survive the first year of life, mainly due to an error in the estimates of sales and costs.

A major cost to consider is the rental or purchase of the premises where you will carry out the activity. This will depend on your possibilities of financing. The cost of both purchase and rent will depend on the business area, among other factors.

The second cost to consider is if you have to carry out a renovation of the premises. We must also take into account the investment in machinery, such as kitchens, coldrooms, ovens, cash registers etc. The cost is usually high.

In the viability plan you also have to assess the initial costs of accounting advice, company incorporation(where applicable), staff costs, social security and taxes.

And of course, you must also consider the purchase of furniture, raw materials and the necessary working capital to income.

In relation to accounting, we recommend to ask an expert, as there are several legal possibilities for the formation of the business. Let yourself advise by an accounting expert on the legal format that most suits you as it will depend on the characteristics of the business (size, number of employees, number of tables, turnover). If the business is incorporated as a company accounting will be more complex than if it is as “autónomo” (self employed) which will host to the fiscal regime of “estimación directa”  or of “módulos”.
